Last Saturday welcomed the perfect weather for Rachel Renfrow and M. Rae Thompson’s wedding. The venue was set at the beautiful and historic Madonna Inn located in San Louis Obisbo, CA. The Madonna Inn is a historic motel that boasts 40 unique rooms and world-famous bathrooms. The property spans over 1,000 acres of vibrant grass and well-kept flower beds, making it the perfect setting for a wedding.

The Madonna Inn does not have any correlation to the infamous pop-star. It is famous for its retro interior and elaborate architecture. The inn was constructed in the late 1950’s by Alex and Phyllis Madonna, down the street from the first motel in the world. When it was first constructed, there were only 12 rooms available, but its popularity quickly grew and became the perfect resting stop for families, couples, touring bands, travelers, and newlyweds.
Guests for the wedding were expected to arrive that Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. for the event. The ceremony was held in the main dance floor, which was decorated with luscious pinks and floral patterns. They would then proceed to the round room for a cocktail hour, followed by a reception, located in the garden room. Other amenities included the estates café, wine cellar, spa, bakery, outdoor pool, and restaurant.
There is never ever a dull moment at the Madonna Inn. The inn has played host to touring bands and musicians, including renowned artists such as Beach House and the Fleet Foxes. This April, the inn will be screening Pink Flamingos with American Filmmaker John Waters. Tickets and info can be found here.
Weddings remain the cornerstone of business at the Madonna Inn. When the global pandemic of 2020 hit, the motel owner, Connie Pearce (daughter of Alex and Phyllis Madonna) kept the motel’s nearly 300 employees hired. The inn remains a union-operated business and relies on its unique charm and excellent service to stay open.
