Night To Shine 2023: An Unforgettable Prom Night at Bridges Community Church

What is Night To Shine?

A Night To Shine is the highlight of the year for many people living with special needs. It is a magical prom experience that celebrates people with disabilities (honored guests), crowning them as kings and queens, and giving them the opportunity to dress up and be valued by their community.

Night to Shine is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation and hosted by churches all around the world. The celebration usually takes place around Valentine's day and is more than just an event - it is a symbol of hope, inclusion, and love.

The first Night to Shine event was held in 2015, and since then it has grown into a world-wide phenomenon, with events held in more than 30 countries, all on the same day. Each year the event brings together thousands of volunteers, churches, and community organizations, all working together to create an unforgettable experience for the participants.

Preparation

Volunteers met at Bridges Community Church to prepare for the event more than a week before the scheduled date. They were trained on the different types of disabilities, appropriate use of language, and needs of the participants. The church was aided by Joni and Friends, a local Bay Area retreat for people living with disabilities and their families. The Santa Clara County Fire Department also assisted the event, acting as the medical team. There was a Q&A as well as a tour of the facilities.

Volunteers were also instructed on parking and dress code etiquette. Everyone wanted to make this a special night for the participants. By the end of the day, anticipation for Night To Shine was high. Everyone counted down the days until the event.

The Event

On the night of February 10th, Bridges Community Church transformed their campus into a wonderland for its guests. There were large marquees, balloon columns, string lights, heaters, limousines, and a red carpet for guests to walk down. The atmosphere was full of excitement and anticipation while the volunteers waited for their honored guests to arrive.

Each honored guest received a crown or tiara upon entering the church entrance. They wore beautiful gowns and suits and were greeted by their “buddy”, a volunteer that would guide them through the night. The guests were taken on a limo ride and welcomed with a red carpet walk, lined with a welcoming committee of over 50 people.

The schedule for the rest of the night was determined by the honored guest. The church offered a variety of activities including a dance hall, dinner, photo booth, game room, and karaoke stage. Most of the guests enjoyed dancing or taking pictures with the Chick-Fil-A cow mascots.

At the end of the night, everyone gathered in the dance hall to celebrate together. Honored guests, volunteers, buddies, parents, and community organizers all came together to sing Don’t Stop Believing by Journey. It left many attendees emotional and happy for the new friendships made. It was heartwarming to see the joy and happiness brought by everyone who was involved.

Night to Shine event is not only an unforgettable night for guests but also for their families and caregivers. Families and caregivers get to see their loved ones having the time of their lives, making new friends, and feeling accepted for who they are. The event provides families and caregivers with a night of respite, knowing that their loved ones are in good hands and having a great time. It is a unique experience that celebrates people with special needs, providing them with an unforgettable evening of fun, dancing, and celebration. The event is designed to make guests feel loved, valued, and celebrated for who they are, and it provides families and caregivers with a night of respite and brings the community together in celebration of our value and perfect creation in the image of God.
