EP Review: Fantasies by Bombay Bicycle Club

Featuring: Lucy Rose, Rae Morris, Liz Lawrence, and Matilda Mann

Bombay Bicycle Club’s four-track EP, Fantasies, was officially released to the public in February 2024 taking the BBC fanbase by surprise, released only six short months after thier previous album.

Following the band’s ten-year hiatus and release of two albums, Fantasies was a sweet finish to the experimental initiatives taken in My Big Day (the egg album).

The EP features long-time BBC friends (and legends) Liz Lawrence, Rae Morris, Matilda Mann, and Lucy Rose. The tone of Fantasies is familiar and reminiscent of the band’s best album So Long See You Tomorrow. While drawing comparisons to the band’s 2014 release is not something I want to mark this album by, I want to acknowledge the Bombay ‘feeling’ that comes through in this EP, which is something that the band strayed away from in My Big Day

To me, the Bombay Bicycle Club “sound” is not a something that is hard to pinpoint. Their music is hopeful, dancey, and always has a strong rhythmic presence. On Fantasies, I would argue that the strongest track is “Willow” featuring none other than Lucy Rose.

One of the best parts about Bombay Bicycle Club is the community they seem to build wherever they go. I think this comes through in their music as well, it sounds optimistic. Take a listen for yourself.
